This thesis studies the impact of the incoming photography on graphic design techniques and concepts during Modern China.Photography is an important branch of art. Invented in 18 th century, photography has had a tremendous impact on modern visual language, because of its lifelike imaging and efficient information transmission. Soon afterwards, people began to pursue the possibility of a large number of image copies and lower the cost at the same time, which prompted the combination of photography and printing, and then brought the combination of photography and graphic design. Early application of photography in Graphic Design has changed the art forms of Graphic Design in a great deal, and thus it plays an important role in modern graphic design.As the introduction of photography in the late Qing Dynasty China, images brought in the visual culture that focuses on objectively reproducing the instant moment, which obviously differs from traditional Chinese image concept. At the same time, accompanied by the incoming modern printing technology and its development, photography makes a great contribution on graphic design of Modern China, under the influence of both Eastern and Western.Image, as a new form of graphic, has a direct impact on the expression techniques of lithographic, advertising calendar and other early graphic design firstly. The new image concept promotes the combination of photography and printing continuously. And the image plate technology was invented and developed rapidly, which makes extensive use of photography become possible. At that time, people gradually formed the concept of the new image, and the whole country was under social change and economic development with the influence of the West. High demand of images came from all sectors of the society. The combination of photography and printing prompted the emergence of a large number of new media, such as modern newspapers, magazines, picture books, modern books, advertising posters and packaging. The applications on the new media have prompted public demand for photographic images in return, bringing more contents and styles into Graphic Design. In the cases that showing the combination of photography and graphic design, the thesis summed up the changing process of graphic layout design influenced by photography.Overall, photography prompted the modernization and localization of graphic design in China of the late 19 th and early 20 th century. It helps form the local characteristics of graphic design techniques, and eventually led to diverse styles of graphic design in Modern China.
