The Significance Of Cultural Background Knowledge In The Process Of Escort Interpreting

With the deepened globalization, along with the deepening of the globalization, there has been constant communication between different cultures, as an important means of cross-cultural communication, interpreting has attracted more attention. Escort interpreting in the meantime is widely used in cross-cultural activities. It involves a number of complicated procedures which can be affected by a variety of factors, and cultural background knowledge is one of them. Until now, many domestic and overseas studies have manifested that background knowledge have a positive correlation with interpreting quality, which means a good mastery of cultural background knowledge can better reduce the negative influence to the quality of escorting interpreting in various ways. Therefore, whether the interpreter has the cultural background knowledge related to the source language can lead to an obvious difference in his or her interpreting process.This paper is an interpreting practice report. Based on the interpreting tasks that the author has completed during the Alcatel-Lucent Internship Program, this report described the interpreting process in the Alcatel-Lucent Internship Program and the corresponding feedback the author has got, so as to analyze how cultural background knowledge influence listening analysis, memory, reconstruction and delivery in escort interpreting. In addition, this report also summarized the importance of cultural background knowledge, put forward relevant suggestions on how to improve one’s level of it effectively and how to deal with the problems caused by the lack of it, which can be used as references by other interpreters.
