As a provincial literary journal, Sichuan Literature devoted a new column called "Luan Tan" with the attitude of a pioneer in 1985, which concentrated upon publishing excellent essays. This new column "Luan Tan", coming out essays specially, has been retained up to now though the journal title was changed for two times named Contemporary Writer in 1984 and changed back in 1990. "Luan Tan" isn’t only a brand column, but also a distinctive column of literary journals in our country.The column "Luan Tan" published up to 725 essays of 254 authors in 1985-1995. Some of authors had become Chinese contemporary essay masters, or would be in this period, such as Mu Hui, Liu Zheng, Shang Ziyong, Lao Tan, Huang Yilong Zeng Boyan, Zhang Yusheng, Yan Lieshan, Zhu Tiezhi and others. Many works of these essays have already become masterpieces in the history of Chinese contemporary essays. Therefore, it has been an unignorable existence that discussed the history of Chinese contemporary essays, the column "Luan Tan", authors and works.The column "Luan Tan" as well as its authors actively involved in process of Reform and Opening in 1985-1995, which made contributions to the thought liberation and formed free-spirited features in this process. The column does not only set up a platform providing thoughts, literature communication for essay authors in Province and outside, but also make it possible for Sichuan authors’ works toward the whole country (especially Huang Yilong, Lao Tan, Shi Tianhe, etc.). The essay creation of Sichuan authors becomes an important phenomenon of Chinese contemporary essays that are known for extensive topics, acute criticism and literary expression.
