Parent-young Relationships And Self Differentiation: Moderating Of Peer Relationships And Romantic Relationships

Self differentiation is considered to be important development task for college students.Parent-young relationship is one of the most basic relationship and the most important in the family, which is considered to link with in the development of healthy and independent and play an important role in the process.In recent years, under the influence of Ecological System Theory, the effect of the dynamic nature from individual background is increasingly paid attention by more researchers.For college students, in their growth environment, in addition to keeping connecting with their families, interpersonal system outside of their families is the main communication object, mainly including peer relationships and romantic relationships.How these important relationships, however, impacting self differentiation still has not yet been solved.Therefore, this study based on the background from peer relationships and romantic relathionships of college students to explore the relationship of parent-young relationship and self differentiation.According to the principle of convenience sampling, the research was carried out among 410 college students from a comprehensive university in north China with the method of questionnaire survey. Use college students’ Self Differentiation Scale and Relationship Quality Version to explore self differentiation, parent-young relationships, peer relationships and romantic relationships.The main research conclusions are as follows:1. Significant differences have been found in self differentiation from different gender, professional categories, grade and love status. The emotional cutoff of the freshman and sophomore students are higher than the one of the senior students; The emotional cutoff of the students major in literature and history are higher than the one of the students major in science and engineering. The emotional cutoff of the students being in love are higher than the one of the students being in single.2. Significant differences had been found parent-young relationships, peer relationships, romantic relationships from different gender, professional categories and grade.The closeness with father, the closeness with mother and the closeness with peer of the male college students were lower than the one of the female college students. The closeness with mother of the freshman and sophomore students were higher than the one of the senior students. The closeness with peer of the senior students were lower than the one of other grade students. The closeness with father, the closeness with mother and the closeness with peer major in literature and history were higher than the one of the students major in science and engineering.No significant difference was found in the closeness with lover from different gender, professional categories and grade.3. The closeness with father, the closeness with mother, the closeness with peer, the closeness with lover are all was significantly positively with self differentiation related.The discord with father, the discord with mother, the discord with peer, the discord with lover was significantly negative correlation with self differentiation.The closeness with father,the closeness with mother was significantly positively related to the closeness with peer, the closeness with lover.And The discord with father, the discord with mother has significant positive correlation with the discord with peer, the discord with lover. The closeness with peer was significantly positively related to the closeness with lover. The discord with peer has significant negative correlation with the discord with lover.4. The discord with peer may have moderating effect on the relationship between the discord with father and self differentiation.The discord with lover may have moderating effect on the relationship between the closeness with mother(the discord with mother)and self differentiation.
