The table postscript description is different from the calligraphy theory. From the perspective of table postscript description, Subject of “Tie” was very popular in the early and medium stage of Qing dynasty. The calligraphy criticism was inclined to respect and praise the calligraphy of Jin and Tang Dynasty. After the ages of Emperor Qian Long and Jia Qing, textology and epigraphy were in vogue and a large amount of inscriptions widened the view of calligraphers. As the tablet came into being, the respect towards the calligraphy of Jin and Tang Dynasty gradually turned into the advocation of the calligraphy of Han and Wei Dynasty. The sense of textual criticism was very strong in the calligraphy study. The inscription of Han and Wei Dynasty contradicted the traditional subject of “Tie”. Clerical script became the main calligraphy style, coexisting with other styles. And the phenomenon may be the internal logic of the appearance of Qing’s inscription. In the later years of Qing Dynasty, the inscription and subject of “Tie” became the new guidance of the study and development of calligraphy. The revival of subject of “Tie ”reflected the “neutralization” thought of Confucian School. On the basis of this, the author thinks that learning Jin and Tang Dynasty, liking epigraphy, calligraphy styles’ blending, penetrating calligraphy and co-study of inscription and subject of “Tie” together contributed to the mutual blending of inscription and subject of “Tie” in Qing Dynasty, which was totally different from the calligraphy history of Qing Dynasty from the perspective of the traditional calligraphy theory. The table postscript description of Qing Dynasty presented us with a complete evolution process of Qing’s calligraphy that featured the mutual blending of inscription and subject of “Tie”. The four concepts of Qing’s table postscript description were the results of the mutual blending. Subject of “Tie” was throughout the whole history of Qing’s calligraphy. Even after Emperor Dao Guang, Subject of “Tie” earned a place in the study of calligraphy in spite of the popularity of inscription.
