Among listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English, the writingskill attaches great importance to English teaching. Throughout the Englishcomposition of college entrance examination in Xinjiang in past four years, theaverage score of students is not optimistic and the current situation of English writingis unsatisfactory, students’ errors emerge in endlessly. Among all these problems, thepreposition is one of the three most difficult categories of words to master in Englishlearning. Therefore, it is necessary to study the preposition errors in the students’English writing.In this study,550students from10Han classes in NO.23Middle School inUrumqi were taken as subjects and their English compositions in final exam wereused as textual material. By using of the preposition error analysis theory, themistakes appeared in the compositions can be analyzed. Questionnaire and interviewcan be used to get to know the influence of mother tongue’s transfer on English,students’ attitude toward preposition errors, the students’ attention of prepositionlearning and the influence of Chinese on the perception of English prepositionlearning.The results show that: First, among the four preposition errors, underuse ranksthe first, fixed phrase usage errors lies the second, overuse ranks the third andcollocation errors lie the fourth. Second, the ratio of intralingua errors occupies morethan that of interlingua errors. Third, students have different understanding toward theimpact of native language from the survey results, but most students think that thepositive aspects are bigger than negative ones from which it can be known thatstudents’ learning attitude is relatively correct. Fourth, the importance of prepositionlearning is highly regarded by all the students and the error will be resolved indifferent ways by students.At last, the writer offers some related advice on preposition teaching based onthe results studied in this study.
