Physical education plays an important role in improving body development andstrengthening body quality in school education, which aims at cultivatingcomprehensive quality personnel with moral education, intellectual education, andaesthetic education. With the deepening of reform in middle schools, physicaleducation, with the purpose of “happiness, health, lifelong”, has set making eachstudent grasp a kind of sports skill, which is good, healthy and positive, as its teachingaim. Therefore, physical education in middle schools must be in accordance with thebasic developing rules of secondary education and be matched with educational leveland specific requirements of the times. Table tennis is a kind of sports which hasmore entertainment and requires simple equipment, It not only can exerciseparticipants’ sensitiveness, coordination, speed, reaction and strengthen, but also cantrain participants’ wit, calmness, courage and good psychological quality which canbenefit the improvement of students’ physical quality and meet the requirement ofall-round development put forward by The Department of Education. But, there aresome problems existed in the conducting table tennis activities. After the investigationand research on a few middle schools’ table tennis activities, the author has found thefollowing problems:1. The resources of stadium equipment which equipped for the teaching activities oftable tennis in Lanzhou city middle schools are short. Most of schools have indoortables for table tennis, but only two of them have relatively good equipment andindoor condition. Therefore, most of schools can’t meet the needs of students.2. the structure of teachers’ qualification and working duration is reasonable inLanzhou P.E. teachers, most of whom are middle-age, energetic and experienced. But,comparing with other sports games, table tennis teachers are lack in Lanzhou and there are fewer chances for these teachers to get professional table tennis knowledgeand theories. So, the level of table tennis teaching needs improving.3. There are less table tennis matches for middle school students in Lanzhou, wherethe match is held only in summer and winter vacations annually. The communicativeactivities among schools on table tennis are even less, which directly influenced thedevelopment and improvement of table tennis in Lanzhou middle schools.4. There are a lots of students taking part in table tennis activities after school inLanzhou middle schools, but they don’t have guidance and arrangement by thespecific teachers.P.E is a comprehensive course. Only by a single subject education method, it ishard for students to grasp sports skills and strengthen their understanding on sportsprinciples and their experience on sports. Therefore, in order to improve the teachingachievement of table tennis in middle schools and stimulate more students toparticipate table tennis activities, firstly, we should enlarge the teaching input of tabletennis, improve indoor condition and add more equipment of table tennis in middleschools, which can provide a good sports environment for students; Secondly, weshould upgrade the whole degree of middle school teachers and provide theprofessional training and further study chances for table tennis teachers, which canimprove the whole teaching level of table tennis teachers and make them guidestudents better; Thirdly, we should provide in-class practical chances for students,which can help students practice what they have learned in class, strengthen theirknowledge and skills, improve their participation and enjoy table tennis level andfinally lay the foundation for the formation of habit of lifelong sports.
