In recent years, cooperative learning has been increasingly used in classroom teaching. And it has been honored as one of the most successful educational reforms in modern times. The paper aims to use cooperative learning in English writing class to improve junior students’ writing. Starting with the current situation of English writing in junior middle school, this paper briefly analyses the existing problems in current English writing teaching in junior middle school. Then the paper discusses about the significance, the research status quo, the basic elements, and the classroom techniques of cooperative learning, which provides guidance for the practical implementation of cooperative learning. The author conducts a 3-month research in a class from junior 3. The implementation of cooperative learning in writing is divided into three stages:pre-writing stage, while writing stage and post-writing stage. In the process of writing, the author uses discussion and brainstorm in groups, cooperative drafting, peer review and other forms of cooperation. In order to explore the effects of cooperative learning on students’writing, the questionnaire, students’ course feedback, teacher’s observation are used. The results show that cooperative learning can arouse junior students’interest, boost their confidence, lower the difficulty of English writing, thus improve students’writing ability. Students generally have a positive attitude towards cooperative writing. They are willing to participate in the cooperative learning activities and approve of its benefit to their English writing. But some problems, such as their imbalance of participation, lack of cooperative learning skills and the inadequate preparation before class also occur in the process of implementation. In the end, the author gives corresponding suggestions on how to solve these problems. The paper focuses on how to use cooperative learning in English writing class of junior high school. Hopefully, it will be helpful for further research in this field.
