The presenting way of the culture around us has changed gradually without our notice. The transmission of information, with pictures as its main vehicles, is getting more people’s favor. The coming of the “picture reading age” makes pictures become a main trend. It has become an increasingly prominent problem for us on how to quickly and exactly read the pictures when facing so many kinds of images which are unavoidably mixed with bad information, especially for middle school students. Their contact with knowledge widens and their thinking abilities, aesthetic faculties, comprehension and judgment are developing gradually. It is just in the process of this gradual development, their abilities to feel and interpret beauty are highly adaptable. So it is very important to guide the students to obtain useful information from numerous fresh and attractive pictures.“The ability of reading pictures” refers to people’s ability of reading, interpreting, extracting and creating of pictures, which is mainly embodied in their ways of viewing, thinking and creating. Moreover, the demand of people for picture interpreting ability has challenged the education today. Art education, which is very extensive, has penetrated into each aspect of our life and picture works in our life all contain elements of art. Therefore, it is effectively applicable to explore effective methods to cultivate students’ picture interpreting ability in Art Appreciation Teaching. Art Appreciation Teaching in Middle school plays an irreplaceable role in cultivating students’ aesthetic quality. As is known to all, it is very difficult to interpret all the pictures accurately because of its wide range of areas. So in this thesis, the author tries to find out some effective ways in the areas of Art education directly related to visual sense, in order to provide some references to the public. Art teachers should pay attention to cultivating of the students’ ability and training students to interpret pictures from different angles.Art appreciation in training student’s “ability of reading pictures” has many advantages and conveniences, no matter it is related to this course’s own characteristics, or its teaching requirements, or the contents of appreciation. All of these contain abundant image information and this is very useful for nourishing students’ picture-reading ability. Of course, there are also some insufficiencies in the developing of this ability. Combined with the results of related questionnaire survey, the author makes a deep analysis about the existing problems and finally explores some convenient and feasible teaching strategies based on the results of the analysis. These strategies also provide some references for other teachers who are also doing the similar research. The author has put forward some personal suggestions in the arrangement of teaching schedule, collection of picture resources and teaching methods, especially in the synchronous analysis of some practical teaching cases together with the teaching methods. By using different picture reading methods, such as reading by comparing, reading in context, reading with discipline combination and so on, we can help to improve the students’ picture reading ability.
