During the period of 13 th June to 13 th July in 2014, one of the most popular sports of the world, the 20 th FIFA World Cup was inaugurated in Sao Paulo, city of Brazil, where 32 national teams, which were originated from Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Caribbean Area, played 64 games for the title of the champion. Due the dramatic glamour and attraction of football, world-class football matches are considered not only as a delicious meal, but also a presentation of beauty. Therefore, no matter of football player or audience is influenced by the spirits of passion, dream, happiness and faith. That is to say, more and more people, such as juvenile, adult, old, are appealed to play soccer or watch game all over the world. Undoubtedly, football by which different racial people gather together for fun or communication,is considered as the label of fair, harmonious and active.Recently, the researches of characteristic of football games mainly focus on the elements of attack and defend. However, through the application of analysis methods of literature review, video observation, statistics summary and questionnaire, the total games of 32 national teams in World Cup are discussed critically. In another words, through the careful discussion of videos of 64 games, the statistical summaries among each teams, which include possession, cards, shot analysis, are compared thoroughly. Eight elements of attack statistics and four elements of defensive statistics are applied for discussion of the characteristics of the 20 th FIFA World Cup.The outcomes of my dissertation show that European teams rank one half positions in quarter finals, which include Germany(1), Holland(3), Belgium(6) and France(7); three teams are from South American, such as Argentina(2), Brazil(4) and Colombia(5); the last team is Costa Rica(8), a small country in Caribbean Area. The obvious differences of attack between superior teams and inferior teams could be analyzed from eight elements, which are passing complete, corner, free kick, offside, shot on target, total shot, possession and shot off target. On the other hand, the distinctions of defend could be presented in five elements, which include fault, red card, yellow card, tackle and clearance kick. Influenced by multi-factors in the world, European national teams and South American teams are superior than the other national teams in Aisa, Africa and Australia. Therefore, the strategy of Total Football has been improved and experienced by more and more teams. That is say, the Total Football become a basic trend in modern football game. Moreover, different national teams in same continent also present huge difference in total qualities and football characteristics, which play important role in improvement of disadvantages in inferior teams. More experience and practice make teams progress.Through a analysis of match video of 32 teams in Brazil, the transform characteristics of modern football between attack and defend could be imagined clearly. The outcomes show that traditional tactics, such as frank kick and clean kick, are instituted by the tactics of modern football, which become more and more flexible and fast in the requirements of players. Compared with the teams in last FIFA World Cup, the teams in 20 th World Cup prefer to not only ball possession and short pass, but also long pass and counter attack. In addition, when attack, more and more players prefer to apply wing and midfield together. Through comprehensive practice of modern football strategy, the conscious of attack and defend is improved quickly. Moreover, the 20 th FIFA World Cup shows that team work, ball possession and shot complete play important roles in modern football matches.
