Affective Filter Hypothesis(AFH) was put forward by American linguist Krashen in 1980 s at the field of Second Language Acquisition. In this thesis, the author relates three elements of AFH — learning motivation, learning confidence and learning anxiety—to English reading in order to find out the relevance between these three factors of Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis and reading achievement. The study about English reading is always a hot spot among scholars abroad and at home. Reading is a crucial part of integrated skills from the perspective of English learning, it enables language learners to check whether they have grasped the previous knowledge, meanwhile, to broaden their horizon. From the perspective of Chinese examination-oriented education system, reading score takes up a large proportion of the total in various English examinations. Therefore, the author chooses English reading achievement as the theme of the study.According to Krashen(1982), AFH has two aspects: ‘affective’ and ‘filter’. After combining these two parts with English reading learning, ‘affective ‘can be noticed as three affective factors of English learners: reading motivation, confidence and anxiety.Filter is the positive or negative effects brought by these elements. Affective Filter includes higher and lower ones. The higher can be identified as a language learner who has weaker reading motivation, insufficient reading confidence and more reading anxiety. It makes the learner have a great difficulty in English reading learning and achieving a better reading score. The lower can be known as a learner who has stronger reading motivation, abundant reading confidence and less reading anxiety. This may lead the learner to have a better reading process and preferable achievement. To suit this argument, the author uses questionnaire to conduct a case study of Urumqi No.20 High School to figure out 215 senior two Chinese Han students’ conditions in English reading learning motivation, confidence and anxiety, collects their reading scores in midterm examination and then utilizes interviewing method. Finally, the author proves the relevance between three factors of Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis and English reading achievement: reading motivation and reading achievement are positively related; reading confidence and reading achievement are positively related; reading anxiety and reading achievement are negatively related.
