According to the New English Curriculum Standard, “the general teaching objectives are to cultivate students’ ability to use language comprehensively, promote mind development and improve attainment of humanities.” The realization of comprehensive use of language is based on the overall development of students’ language skills, knowledge, attitudes, strategies and cultural consciousness. In the fourth part of the second section in the NECS, it is said that evaluation is an essential part of NECS and the scientific evaluation system is the guarantee of the fulfillment of the curriculum objectives. And formative assessment is advocated for monitoring and promoting the process of English teaching and learning(NECS).The study was intended to find that whether formative assessment can help stimulate the students’ interest in English learning and how it works. The attention was given to the impact on learning interest especially in primary school English teaching.It is an action study. During the process of study, the author absorbed new theory and adjust research continuously in practical operation. The author carried out the study in a class of 45 students. The author practiced formative assessment tools like checklists, rating scales and portfolios. And the author made pre-questionnaires and post-questionnaires and did interviews after the experiment.From questionnaires and interviews, we found that the optimistic changes have taken place. And the author has got some hints for future teaching and learning. More pupils became more interested and confident in English learning. It was concluded that applying formative assessment had positive impact on fostering and keeping learning interest. As the pupils have more interest in English learning, their autonomy also developed.
