Autonomy has increasingly become influential in the field of foreign or second language education and learning. Learner autonomy has become an important goal in this field. With the increasing development and promotion of learner autonomy, the idea of teacher autonomy has gradually become the focus of English language researchers. Although teacher autonomy is originated with the widespread development and promotion of learning autonomy, teacher autonomy is now widely recognized as a main factor which has a great impact on the development and promotion of learner autonomy. And teacher autonomy gradually forms as an important foreign or second language methodology. A lot of researchers were buried in making research on learner autonomy and teacher autonomy in the subjects stage as English majors. The author wants to put the research in learners stage as senior high school students. The researcher presented the thesis by quantitative and qualitative data. It was designed to investigate whether teacher autonomy has certain positive effects on learner autonomy and learners English language proficiency or not. The research was mainly concerned with the present autonomous teaching and learning situation in Pingchuan senior high school, and how much teacher autonomy affects learner autonomy and learners English language proficiency, in other words, to what extent teacher autonomy positively affects learner autonomy and learners English language proficiency. The author has made an investigation in the senior high school, so the thesis presents a detailed description of the research. There are in all five chapters in this thesis. In chapter one, the author mainly makes a brief description of the research background and the significance of the present research. In chapter two, it first briefly makes a literature review on the previous and present theoretical studies about the focus of the present research. It is mainly on the definition of autonomy, the definition of learner autonomy and that of teacher autonomy, and then presents the interrelationships between teacher autonomy and learner autonomy, the character and optional ways of teacher autonomy. In chapter three, the researcher presents the research design thoroughly. It makes a thorough statement of the research design, including data collection procedures, namely, subjects, questionnaires for students about their understanding of teacher autonomy and learner autonomy, interviews for teacher autonomy, quantitative and qualitative data collection process. In chapter four Xthe author first carries out the investigation into the present situation in senior high school on learner autonomy by questionnaires for students and teacher autonomy by interviews for teachers, makes analyses of the questionnaires and the interviews, and then makes it clear that teacher autonomy does have positive effect on learner autonomy. In chapter five, the conclusion of this thesis is presented, and the drawbacks of the research this time and the author s practical and accessible suggestions for further study on teacher autonomy and learner autonomy.
