With the fast development of China’s corporations’ overseas mergers and acquisitions, the number of those reports has reached a big scale. Under this background,China’s media should take this chance to report efficiently overseas, besides, it is also important to hold the international discourse right through this opportunity. This paper selected the purchase of Smithfield Foods Inc. by Shuanghui International Holding Ltd. as the example, based on the Framing Theory, to compare the differences between the newspaper reports from China and US. China Daily(with China Daily USA) and The Wall Street Journal(with The Wall Street Journal Asia) are the samples of this paper: the former one is the most popular English newspaper in China, and the later one is the most widely-circulated newspaper in America. The hierarchy and structure research of the Framing Theory are used in this paper to analyze the content and to describe the features of the reports from the newspapers in two countries mentioned above, especially from the high hierarchy(the theme frame), the middle hierarchy(the structure frame) and the low hierarchy(the word frame). In addition, the investigation and the evaluation of the framing effects will be demonstrated in this paper. This paper shows that the reports from China Daily(with China Daily USA)focused on the main event of this purchase, while The Wall Street Journal(with The Wall Street Journal Asia) reports this purchase by presenting the story with as much details as possible. As a result, different frames create different images of the two countries and their corporations as well as different comments from China’s and US audiences. Finally, this paper aims to provide China’s media with advices to report efficiently overseas.
