Broadband multimedia communication satellite system is a new generation of multimedia communication system that can provide multimedia services, high-speed transmission and switching, and global non-seam coverage. Consequently, it is of significance in academia and prospect in application. Compared with the ground networks, the broadband multimedia satellite network has the characters of the high delay, high bit error rate and the limited resources. Besides, it is large in scale and composed of various devices. Therefore, the satellite network management system is highly required.This dissertation introduces the architecture of the satellite network management system, network management protocols and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). We choose SNMP as the optimized satellite network management protocol to develop the network management prototype based on the needs of network management system. The software modules of the manager and agent are designed along with the implementation of the interface and functional design of each functional module in network management system. We optimally choose SNMP++ and Agent++ to implement the modules of network topology, configuration management and performance management of the network management system. We also verify the prototype of the network management system on the simulation platform. According to the requirements of the satellite network management and functions of the original SNMP protocol, the SNMP function is modified and enhanced in the aspects of the reliability, flow control and data processing mode.
