In earth observation field Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is not affected by theweather conditions and it can penetrate the canopy. The image from SAR has a clearcontours and structure information. So the SAR occupies an extremely important positionin the modern field of remote sensing. Currently, the geographic information system (GIS)data come from the early site investigation and based on the optical image production,the former would long-cycle and much cost when update the GIS, the latter often affectedby bad weather or shelter of mountain, so the data can't be a complete description of theimaging area. Therefore, use the SAR image as a data source for updating GIS has becomethe first choice for solving the problem which long-cycle update of GIS. On the otherhand, due to the GIS database contains a large number of geographic information thathave interpreted by researchers, therefore, use GIS information to indoctrinate SARimage interpretation has become a hot research topic in the remote sensing field.This paper mainly research for use SAR image to update the GIS database and useGIS data to assisted extraction in the SAR images. Prerequisite for the realization ofwhich the first is to conduct SAR images and GIS registration and fusion, therefore, thispaper research about the registration and fusion of SAR images and GIS, to provide theconditions for use SAR images to update the GIS, The main contents are as follows:(1) First studied the SAR image feature extraction technologies, mainly three typesof target which residential area, the airport, the waters were studied that designed toprepare for the registration of SAR images and GIS. Among them, the extraction methodof residential area mainly use GLCM texture analysis; airport for extraction is proposedto extract linear detection after a region segmentation algorithm; for waters extraction, adetailed study of a species based active contour segmentation method.(2) SAR image and GIS registration. Mainly analysis the SURF matching algorithm,and an algorithm to remove false matching points is proposed which based on thetriangulation algorithm, the experimental results show that the algorithm can effectivelymatch the error occurred during the match points removed.(3) Based on the registration of SAR image and GIS, then study use the GISinformation to guide the extract the target in the SAR images. Through convert theinformation of GIS to an image get the location and detection of targets in a SAR image.(4) Based on the registration and fusion of two-dimensional SAR image and GIS,then discuss the registration of three-dimensional GIS data and the DEM.
