In this paper, the Yangqu district located in the Qinshui Basin was selected as a focus for investigating the main factors influencing on the hydrocarbon generating potential of source rocks in coal measures. Based on that, favorable source rock target areas were found out. Through systematically analyzing the geological conditions of the study area, sedimentary system and environment of coal-bearing strata were subdivided according to the principle of sequence stratigraphy. Then, the distribution characteristics of source rocks were clarified further. The types of source rocks were confirmed by means of studying their organic phase. Finally, the hydrocarbon generating potential of source rocks was comprehensively evaluated by analyzing their macerals, pyrolysis features and geochemistry characteristics. Results are as follows:Lithotypes in yangqu district were mainly bright coal based on folder vitrain bands and a small amount of dark coal. Macerals were mainly vitrinite, a few inertinite and very little exinite. Vitrinite reflectance was between 1.18?1.53%, same as bituminous coal metamorphic stage. The vertical trends of vitrinite reflectance volatile and sulfur content are very clear. Combined with the value of GI and TPI, coal in Shanxi formation were mainly high marsh facies, coal in Taiyuan formation were mainly forest swamp facies.Besides coal, Carboniferous-Permian Shanxi Taiyuan formations' mudstone and carbargilite are also effective source rocks in yangqu district. The vertical trends of organic abundance was not clear. Through test and calculation methods such as total organic carbon chloroform bitumen "A" and hydrocarbon generating potential(S1+S2), the organic abundance of source rocks in yangqu district were evaluated as medium abundance source rock.favorable source rock target areas were pointed out in the east, the west area was less abundant in organic abundance. Through test and calculation methods such as maceral type index kerogen elements rock-eval and kerogen isotope, the organic type of source rocks in yangqu district were evaluated as ? kerogen,mainly generating gas. Through test and calculation methods such as Vitrinite reflectance and rock-eval, the organic maturity of source rocks in yangqu district were evaluated as in mature stage. The source rock were mainly generating gas. The vertical trends of organic maturity went bigger with the depth.
