Electromagnetic forming, as a new forming method with promising future, has driven the development of electromagnetic forming apparatus. Nowadays most research is on single-stage electromagnetic forming. The 973 project, "Basic Research on Prototyping and Manufacturing in the Multiple Space Pulsed Magnetic Field", issued by the National High Magnetic Field Center of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, has carried out multi-level electromagnetic forming research for the first time. The design has developed high-precision multi-level electromagnetic forming apparatus and its supporting control system, for actual requirement of the project.This paper first studied the RLC electromagnetic forming circuit and the improved version, analyzed the influence of circuit parameters on the current waveform and the influence of waveform parameters on the forming effect, and simulated the current waveform. Based on the analysis the paper carried on main circuit selection of single-stage electromagnetic forming. According to the experiment requirement, the control system of single-stage electromagnetic forming at the core of DSP has been developed.On the basis of single-stage forming, the paper further studied the matching problem of two-level electromagnetic solenoid forming circuit and the current waveform, and clarified the design requirements of the two-level electromagnetic solenoid forming apparatus and its control system. By adding the high-precision multi-channel trigger module at the core of DSP + FPGA to the existing control system of single-stage electromagnetic forming, the paper developed an electromagnetic forming device with multi-level hierarchical structure and assorted timing control system, and theoretically analyzed the relative delay error triggered by multi-level timing of the system. Multi-level timing control system not only realized trigger control, current and voltage waveform acquisition, charge control and fault protection in multi-level experiment, but also retained the ability of single-stage control, which could conduct single-stage discharge experiment separately.Finally, the paper presented the experiments on single-stage electromagnetic formingand multi-stage electromagnetic forming. Through comparative analysis of experimental waveforms and simulation waveforms, it validated that the multi-level electromagnetic forming apparatus and its control system can fully meet the requirements of experimental design, and can provide accurate timing trigger control and data waveform acquisition for multi-level experiment.
