The flash flood disaster, featuring torrent, sudden release of water, mass destruction and unpredictability, is one of the most hazardous terrestrial natural disasters frequently responsible for loss of life and severe damage to infrastructure, social economy and the environment. At present, the flash flood disaster prevention and control are becoming a worldwide issue to be solved urgently. There are currently two kinds of measures for flash flood disaster prevention and control, namely, engineering measures and non-engineering measures. Through the effective combination of both, an integrated system has been set up. The system consists of people's self-protection measures, engineering measures and non-engineering measures. Both engineering measures and non-engineering measures are based on people's profound understanding of the flash flood, including its formation mechanism, movement, etc. With the advances in geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS), the widely advocated flash flood warning and forecast method, a combination of distributed hydrological model (DHM) and GIS and RS, has become an important part of non-engineering measures in flash flood prevention and control system. The paper presents a flash flood dynamic visualization method:in terms of visualization in scientific computing (ViSC), the method is based on GIS and RS with DHM (made up of SCS-CN model and hydrodynamic model) as the main component to drive flash flood hydrological processes; Then a process-oriented spatio-temporal data model is built for flash flood and flash flood dynamic visualization simulation results are presented in the main form of computer video or animation, which intuitively manifestes the spatio-temporal changes of flash flood hydrological processes. The method offers an effective means to learn about flash flood and analyze it. On the basis of this method, Flash Flood Risk Analysis and Emergency Management System (FRAEMS) was established and applied to the analysis and simulation of classical flash flood events in Xiyuanjiang Watershed of Fuzhou City in Fujian Province. The system has provided useful technical support for flash flood disaster prevention and control of this district. The method, characterized by less parameter, accessibility by using GIS and RS, high calculation efficiency, intuitive and vivid results and so on, will be an important supplement of flash flood disaster prevention and control system and can be promoted nationwide.
