A Comparative Study On Kawabe Tegami's And DaiZhen's Collation And Annotation Of Zhou Bi Suan Jing

The Zhou Bi Suan Jing that is written in the Western Han Dynasty is an important mathematical astronomy classics in ancient China.Many Scholars collate and annotate it since Zhao Shuang do some collation and annotation of the Zhou Bi Suan Jing in Three Kingdoms period.Zhou Bi Suan Jing is disseminated to many other countries in cultural circle of Chinese characters under Chinese cultural influence.Kawabe Tegami who lives in Japan Edo era(1603~1867)and Dai Zhen that lives in Qian Long period nearly belong to the same period and they collate and annotate the Zhou Bi Suan Jing respectively by themselves under textual criticism and western cultural effect.Kawabe Tegami creates Zhou Bi Suan Jing Tu Jie(referred to the graphic version)and Dai Zhen finishes Wen Yuan Ge Si Ku Quan Shu(referred to the Dai Zhen's version).The paper aims to compare Kawabe Tegami's collation and annotation of the Zhou Bi Suan Jing with Dai Zhen's by using the original versions of Xu Xiu Si Ku Quan Shu,Wen Yuan Ge Si Ku Quan Shu,Jin Dai Mi Shu and Zhu Zi Bai Jia Cong Shu.At the same time,some modern scholars points of view are added in the analysis.Although they adopt different original versions,they should get compliments by doing contribution in collation aspect.In terms of annotation,Kawabe Tegami does much more meticulous.In addition,Kawabe Tegami dares to criticize the predecessors' work.The paper is divided into five parts:The first chapter points out the reason why the paper is about to make comparison of Kawabe Tegami's collation and annotation of the Zhou Bi Suan Jing with Dai Zhen's.The fact is that many Chinese and Japanese scholars do some research of Zhou Bi Suan Jing,but Chinese scholars pay little attention to noticing these Japanese achievements which are beneficial for us to collate,annotate and understand the Zhou Bi Suan Jing.The second chapter introduces the Japanese scholars learn Chinese cultural situation in Edo era.In this period,the textual criticism is so popular that it provides a wonderful academic environment to Japanese scholars.Those people do much collation and annotation of ancient Chinese books including the Zhou Bi Suan Jing.Meanwhile,it reflects the spread condition of the Zhou Bi Suan Jing.The third chapter mostly focus es on Kawabe Tegami's collation and annotation of the Zhou Bi Suan Jing.Above all,it point out the difference between Kawabe Tegami and Dai Zhen in original versions.Then it introduces the specific collation including missing words,excessive words,wrong words,inverted words,misplaced sentences.It figures out that Kawabe Tegami's collation and Dai Zhen's have many in common,but there are some differences.The outstanding differences consist in the adjustment of misplaced sentences and graphic annotation.Thegraphic version adjusts 13 misplaced sentences,Dai Zhen and other Chinese scholars do not.Besides,Kawabe Tegami annotates many confusing questions by using graphic annotation,making it more definite and concrete.In addition,many modern scholars(Qian Baocong,Guo Shuchun and Liu Dun and so on)viewpoints are joined in the comparison so that make the analysis more comprehensive and accurate.The forth chapter mostly introduces the differences between Kawabe Tegami's collation and annotation of the Zhou Bi Suan Jing and Dai Zhen's.The leading characteristic in Kawabe Tegami's work is graphic annotation.He illustrates many pictures like Ri Gao Tu,Gou Gu Yuan Fang Tu,Qi Heng Tu,Gou Gu Ce Ri Jing,Gai Tian Yu Zhou Mo Xing and so on and attaches specific explanations;meanwhile,Kawabe Tegami elaborates his own understanding for the calculation process and comes up with his much easier methods;besides,Kawabe Tegami dares to criticize the predecessors' work.The fifth chapter summarizes the meaning of the comparison of Kawabe Tegami's work and Dai Zhen's.By comparing the similarities and differences between their works,on one hand,we can learn about the situation of Japan's acceptance,inheritance and development of Chinese culture,on the other hand,the comparing work can provide new understanding for our further research.
