Together with the increasing demand of market, the requirement for accuracy of machines is getting higher and higher, but the production cycles are getting shorter and shorter, which put manufacturing sector under bigger pressure. In recent years, the CNC lathe's technology has been developed dramatically; the machine could replace for human labor, automate the production process, improve the accuracy, quality, and obtain great achievements in mass production. However, to enhance CNC lathes' performance characteristics, it is necessary to have great deal of alternated designs as well as practical analysis, so it is a very time and money consuming tasks. CNC lathe's virtual prototyping technology is a new design method, which does not only reduce designing cost, but can shorten researching time for the product development cycle, improve production capacity and level, thus strengthen the manufacturer's ability to adapt into the market and competitiveness.This article is based virtual prototyping technology to create a virtual prototype model of a lathe, lathe analyzed kinematics and dynamics of lathe headstock dynamic and static characteristics, thereby reducing costs and shortening the design of lathe its development cycle, and its main contents include the following aspects:(1) Research the overall structure of CNC lathes characteristics, formulate the overall design scheme lathe, CNC lathe parts for the structure refinement of design and build a virtual prototype model of a lathe.(2) Analyze analysis of kinematic features of the lathe, solve the problem on forward kinematics and inverse kinematics, check the virtual prototype's collision (in Chinese it means' interference'), drawn law of motion variation, that lay the foundation for the subsequent analysis.(3) Analyze the lathe's dynamic characteristics, drawn law of variation as well as the magnitude of driving force needed for motion of lathe's engines.(4) Using the finite element analysis software ANSYS Workbench 14.0 analyze static and dynamic characteristics of the key components of the lathe-Headstock,,modal analysis and resonant features of the lathe, obtained by the lathe headstock work stress, deformation; vibration characteristics during operating. This creates crucial background for optimizing the headstock structure when designing the machine.
