| The main air pollutants emitted from pig production include ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, volatile organic compounds and particulate matter. Air contaminants in pig houses can cause health effect on the pigs and the stock people. In addition, those air pollutants emitted into the ambient atmosphere will cause environmental pollution. Air pollution in pig houses has been becoming a problem that impedes the pig industry development. Therefore, air quality control technology and methodology development in pig houses has attracted attentions of the international community. The control techniques on air quality in pig houses were investigated in this thesis.1. A feces and urine automatic separation and clean (ASC) system was designed and tested in a commercial farm. The ASC system consists of a V shapeof feces tunnel and an Omega (Ω) shapeof urine collection pipeline, a manure scraper, a driving force equipment, and a manure collection system outside of the pig house. The test results showed that the pig house equipped with ASC system can reduce the indoor odor concentration by 50%, compared with normal houses. With comparison to the deep-pit manure collection system, the ASC system can reduce the sewage discharge by more than 50%. Besides, the ASC system can also reduce the time and labor consumption. The study proved that the ASC system has significant advantages on reducing piggery wastewater and air pollution, and on improving the animal welfare and production efficiency.2. The effect of a novel microorganism deodorant on the concentraions of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) in the air phase from stored digested biogas slurry was studied in a laboratory set-up. The results showed that the concentrations of H2S and NH3 were significantly reduced after one week of deodorant added. Field test was also carried out in a pig farm. We studied the effect of spraying diluted deodorant in pig houses on the concentraions of H2S and NH3. The results also showed that the microbial deodorant can significantly reduce emission of H2S and NH3 in the pig house.3. Based on the previous studies, a compost plant air pollution control system was designed. The main concept of the system was spraying acidic solution with mist formation on the compost. This system has been tested in a compost plant belongs to a commercial pig farm with approciamtely 10 thousands slaughter pigs produced yearly. The test results showed that the acidic solution spray (ASS) system can effectively reduce the odor pollution in the compost plant. The results have also been certified by a third-party testing agency. |
