Boom-type roadheader is widely used in coal mine roadway construction, with the continuous improvement of its structure and function, many safety accidents were resulted from workers' unskilled operation or maintenance of misconduct. Meanwhile, a huge expansion of higher education has increased dramatically demand of cognitive training for mining major students. Because of the limitation of traditional training methods such as hands-on operation or book teaching, the requirement of field operation personnel and students' hands-on operation cannot satisfy. In view of this, a virtual reality simulation platform for boom-type roadheader was designed, which is an application of virtual reality technology and simulation technology.According to the development history and application status of boom-type roadheader and virtual reality technology, basing on method of tunneling work and rules for safety operation, the overall scheme was presented by the function requirement. It included design ideas, system structure, software, hardware and key technical problems. The main achievements contained in this dissertation are as follows:1. A risk assessment analysis method was proposed based on hazard evaluation principles. A safe operational module for training simulation platform was designed by the tunneling work norms and coal mine safety regulation. It realized the safety manipulation of simulation platform.2. Researching on 3D modeling technology, tunnel scene; boom-type roadheader machine; electrical system and other 3D models were built up by polygon modeling method. Then virtual scene was set up. Three dimensional simulation algorithm for tunnel scene and motion characteristic for boom-type roadheader were also studied to enhance the facticity of virtual scene.3. Virtual scene was driven by programmable interface technology and virtual engine technology. With study of virtual reality, the foundation of simulation platform was achieved. Using particle system; programmable high level shader language and texture mapping technology, Gauss fuzzy and gray processing were added into the virtual scene. It generated more real and immersive, satisfied the requirement of high resolution and real-time design.4. According to the actual operating system of roadheader, this dissertation made a hardware platform for virtual simulation platform. With studying the data process on console hardware, a communication protocol between main control computer and console was designed. The aim of man-machine operation interaction between virtual scene and hardware platform was implemented.The simulation platform by virtual reality technology was developed for semi-physical simulation. In terms of user, it is economic, practical and efficient. It also makes up for the limitations of the traditional training method.
