Edge straight crack is one of main quality defect of hot rolled plate, and a universal technical problem. It is also a barrier, that encountered by domestic iron and steel enterprises in micro alloyed high strength steel and ultra low carbon steel slab production with slab. The deformation and temperature in the corner of the plate is the main factors that deduce straight crack defects in hot rolled coil side. To get a theoretical and practical breakthrough to desolve the straight crack problem, the deforming features of the slab cornor should be studied. This will be of great significance to promoting the quality and yield of the hot rolled plate.In this paper, ABAQUS and ANSYS numerical simulation software are used. Combined with the practical test of 230mm×1350 mm cross-section slab, the simulation is carried out. The main goal is to study the corner temperature distribution and deformation characteristics in hot rolling process,focused on the plate corner shape before finishing rolling. In the same time, the plate corner shape and temperature distribution is compared between Chamfered Slab and rectangular billet in hot rolling process.The main contents and the results are as followings.(1) with heat transfer model, the temperature distribution of hot-rolled plate is simulated. The surface temperature of the hot-rolled plate are compared betwee Chamfered Slab and rectangular slab.It is shown that with Chamfered Slab, the temperature in plate corner is higher and uniform. This will be favorable to plate forming at the corner. As a result, the quality of hot-rolled plate is improved.(2) based on typical process, two kinds of finite element models are set up and used to simulate the corner deforming feature of plates rolled with Chamfered Slab and rectangular slab respectively. The results is compared to find the difference. The rolling process is sizing-press,slab-edging-slab in the first rough rolling process,edging slab.It is found that with the Chamfered Slab, the corner deforming of the plate is more uniform and the plate quality is promoted obviously than that with rectangular slab.(3) The rolling test in the factory is carried out to verify the consistency between practical data and the simulation results.such as metal deformation, temperature distribution.It is shown that with chamfer slab, the hot-rolled plate can be kept in well shape and a propriate temperature distribution. This will be suitable for the control of. Edge straight crack.
