Manufacturing is one of the pillar industries of the national economy. However, with the increasingly shortage of natural resources and the deterioration of the environment, they are now becoming the key factors restrict the development of manufacturing enterprises. As the mother machine of manufacturing industry, CNC machine tools is drawing more and more attention to its energy consumption and carbon emission. Focusing on CNC milling process, this paper launched a research about modeling and optimization for its low-carbon manufacturing. The details are as follow:First of all, starting with the energy consumption structure, the energy distribution of CNC machine tool was introduced. And the power balance equation was established according to the multiple source energy flow. After an in-depth analysis of the constitution of the power loss and the expression of cutting power, the input power model of CNC milling machine system was completed. Through a milling experiment, the input power function of CNC milling machine system was figured out. And the conciseness and accuracy of this model to predict the energy consumption of CNC milling machine was confirmed by comparing with references.Secondly, based on the input power model and the different stages of milling process, the functions of energy consumption, carbon emission and unit time profit rate during milling process were built. Combined with actual constraints, a multi-objective optimization model of CNC milling process for low-carbon manufacturing was proposed. Then the model was applied to optimize a milling process with little allowance by using a multi-objective optimization algorithm named Non-dominated Sorting Gravitational Search Algorithm. The result provided decision makers a set of Pareto optimal solutions to choose according to their own situation. Then, for the more general multi-pass milling process, a multi-objective optimization model for low-carbon manufacturing was established. By a decoupling analysis of objective functions, the multi-pass optimization problem was decomposed into several relatively independent single pass optimization problems. For each single pass optimization, Analytic Hierarchy Process was adopted to make the interactive decisions. At last, the procedure obtained a set of optimal milling parameters that meet enterprise's value pursuit of low-carbon manufacturing. Finally, on the basis of the theoretical research, a “cutting parameters optimization of CNC milling process for low-carbon manufacturing” prototype sub-system of “energy efficiency control system of machining workshop” was designed. The functions of modeling and optimization for CNC milling process were integrated into the energy efficiency control system to support production with theoretical guidance.
