Because of its low cost, flame cutting is widely used in steel industry. However, flame cutting leads to a waste of iron.Starting from this, this article researches the gap width of flame cutting.First, the scope of application of flame cutting is described and the features of each cutting method are contrasted. The reason of researching the gap width of flame cutting is also explained. Then the fundamental and the process parameter of flame cutting are illustrated. The features of each fuel are also intruduced. At the experiment part,a 150mm thick steel plate is cut by a NC flame cutting machine.By controlling the flow rates of propane and preheating oxygen, the gap width varies from 4.2 mm to 5.5 mm,which decreases with increasing propane flow and oxygen flow. The propane equivalence ratio which equals to 1.2 can result in a smallest gap width. The contents of each valence state of Fe in the slag can be titrated by using K2Cr2O7.The result shows that the energy generated by the steel combustion is 91.1 kW.Finally,a numerical model of flame cutting process is built to calculate the temperature distribution of the steel and the gap width. The influence of preheating flame is ignored, and a heat source Qt,which uniformly distributed at the torch position,is set to simulate the influence of the cutting oxygen. The result shows the gap width is 4.8 mm when the Qt is 42.4kW.The gap width will increase or decrease 0.1mm when Qt increases or decreases 1kW.The heat convection at the gap width is the major factor of the steel plate's cooling rate, but it has no influence on the gap width.
