On Translation Of Acupuncture Manipulation Terminologies From The Perspective Of Conceptual Metaphor Translation

Diagrams of Acupuncture Manipulations, with detailed and objective explanations, as well as vividly depicted diagrams, have summarized a host of needling methods.Translation of each needling items were diversified in content and they were rendered in simple yet profound explanations. Acupuncture classics were filled with metaphorical sentences, abundant TCM culture, hence the treasure house of allusion and image metaphor. Conceptual metaphors could be found ubiquitous throughout the history.Under the guidance of the Conceptual Metaphor Translation methods, this dissertation evaluated the terminology translation adopted. Based on the metaphor translation standard, from the perspective of its three major principles, selected terms of manipulation were analyzed, and conclusions were drawn. By probing into five kinds of translation techniques applied in the Diagrams, proper translations results have been evaluated respectively. Three metaphorical translation principles consist of the following points. Firstly, retain the metaphorical features. Secondly, bridge the cultural connection between Chinese and English metaphors. Finally, compensate the lost cultural vehicle according to the context.With both random sampling and full sampling, translations of target terms were selected. we chosed18 out of the whole 171 terms using literal translations method, as well as 12 terms using borrowed words from modern medicine, 10 terms using free translation, 17 terms using transliteration, 12 out the whole 47 terms using combination of transliteration & free translation. This dissertation, from the perspective of three major principles, came to the following conclusion: when it comes to the acupuncture manipulations translation, it is advisable to give literal translation the top priority;borrowed words could be adopted when there is the corresponding one in modern medicine, in order to maintain the original connotation and the consistence of metaphors translation; then the free translation can bridge the gap of thinking pattern between west and orient, by transforming elements of meaning and mentality. Target readers, thus, can build similar metaphor image resembling that of original readers,inside of their minds; combination of free translation and transliteration helps when acupoints are concerned; transliteration should be used cautiously under circumstances with great necessity; compensating translation helps to retain the original vehicle and avoid mistranslation, and target readers can share the cultural image mapping with the Chinese speakers.Evaluation of needling method translation is of great significance in international interaction and communication, which is favorable to foreign acupuncture practitioners.The level and application scope of conceptual metaphor translation theory will be deepened and expanded.
