Objective: To explore the influence factors of sclerostin,and to investigate the relationship between sclerostin and vascular calcification in maintenance hemodialysis patients.Methods: 50 patients with maintenance hemodialysis in the second hospital of Hebei medical university and 35 people as control were enrolled into this study.We collected demographic data,and tested hemoglobin,blood calcium,phosphorus,magnesium,cholesterol,triglycerides,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,alkaline phosphatase,serum albumin,intact parathyroid hormone.Serum sclerostin level was assessed by ELISA.Abdominal aortic calcification was evaluated by X-ray plain film,and the valve calcification was examined by cardiac ultrasound.Furthermore,the results were analyzed.Results: Compared with the control group,serum sclerostin level significantly was higher in patients with maintenance hemodialysis(6.53(4.83-9.43)ng/ml vs 3.51(3.07-5.3)ng/ml,P < 0.001),abdominal aortic calcification and the valve calcification were present in 64% and 40% of patients with MHD,respectively.Serum sclerostin level was positively correlated with abdominal aortic calcification and the valve calcification(0.417 and 0.408,respectively),and was negative correlated with intact parathyroid hormone and alkaline phosphatase(-0.283 and-0.407,respectively).Patients with valve calcification and vascular calcification were older,and had higher serum sclerostin level.In addition patients with vascular calcification had higher rates in cardiovascular disease,and alkaline phosphatase and intact parathyroid hormone(iPTH)were lower.Serum sclerostin level in patients with severe abdominal aortic calcification were lower than mild abdominal aortic calcification(9.35(7.67-15.10)ng/ml vs 4.27(3.18-8.62)ng/ml,P<0.05),and Logistic regression analysis suggest serum sclerostin levels is the indepentent protect factor for vascular calcification.Conclusions: In maintenance hemodialysis patients,vascular calcification is widespread,and serum sclerostin level also increases significantly.But whether sclerostin is protect or risk factor for vascular calcification is not clear at present,further researches is needed to clarify.
