Objective: To evaluate in vivo effect of applying different varnishes on prevention of demineralization around orthodontic brackets. Methods: 160 orthodontic patients treated with fixed appliance from October2013 to May 2015 in our department were collected and randomly divided into four groups. Group A(40 patients, 860 teeth) were treated with GC tooth mousse every other month. Group B(40 patients, 853 teeth) were treated with Duraphat varnish every 3 months. Group C(40 patients, 860 teeth) were treated with Clinpro? XT Varnish every 6 months. Group D(40 patients, 902 teeth) did not receive any special treatment. The enamel decalcification index of the labial(buccal) surface of all teeth was calculated before treatment, at 6 months and 12 months after treatment. The data was analyzed by one-way ANOVA.Results: No significant difference was found among the enamel decalcification index of the four groups before treatment(P>0.05). The enamel decalcification index of four groups all increased and Group A, Group B, Group C were significantly lower than Group D after 6 and 12 months(P<0.05). The enamel decalcification index among Group A, Group B and Group C did not differ significantly after 6 and 12months(P>0.05).Conclusions: The use of GC tooth mousse, Duraphat varnish and Clinpro? XT Varnish during comprehensive orthodontic treatment had beneficial effect on the prevention of enamel demineralization. Meanwhile, without using these varnishes, therisk of enamel demineralization increased obviously.
