ObjectiveThese study of Polygonum chinense Linn on anti-pyrexia,jaundice-relieving,ant i-inflammat ion and abirritation were expected to facilitate the exploitation of Chinese herbal medicine by providing reference data.MethodsThese researches of Polygonum chinense Linn thereinafter included the tripartite experiments:(1)Study of aqueous extract from Polygonum chinense Linn on anti-pyrexia.Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups randomly. The blank control group was orally administered with physiological saline once per day for a week’ s duration, while the experimental groups received the aqueous extract from Polygonum chinense Linn at dosages of 22.42g/kg,11.21 g/kg,5.60 g/kg accordingly. On the seventh’ s day after the beginning of experiment, indomethacin suspension was orally administered to the positive control group. Then the rat febrile models, induced by injecting fresh yeast subcutaneously, were constructed to compare the temperature differences among groups for the observation of the pyrexic effect.(2)Study of aqueous extract from Polygonum chinense Linn on jaundice-relieving and its mechanism.Sprague Dawley rats were divided into six groups by stochastic assignment. The normal and jaundice control groups were orally administered with physiological saline. The experimental groups received the aqueous extract from Polygonum chinense Linn at dosages of 22.42g/kg,11.21 g/kg,5.60 g/kg respectively.Yinzhihuang suspension was orally administered to the positive control group.Drugs were given to each group once a day for nine days’ durations. Then on the ninth day after the beginning of experiment, the hepatic functional indices in serum and level of malondialdehyde(MDA)and superoxide dismutase(SOD),as well as pathological changes in liver tissue, were determined to observe the effect on jaundice-relieving from Polygonum chinense Linn, via the a-naphthy lisothiocyanate(ANIT)-induced models of jaundice in rats.(3)Study of aqueous extract from Polygonum chinense Linn on anti-inflammation and abirritation.Kunming mice were divided into five groups by random assignment. The blank control group was orally administered with physiological saline once per day for a week’ s duration, while the experimental groups received the aqueous extract from Polygonum chinense Linn at dosages of 49.32g/kg、24.66g/kg、12.33g/kg accordingly. On the seventh’ s day after the beginning of experiment, indomethacin suspension was orally administered to the positive control group. Then the swelling auricles caused by Xylol and the increase of capillary permeability by acetic acid, both of which were established to compare the differences of the inhibition ratio of swelling auricles and capillary permeability in the interior-group for the observation of the anti-inflammatory effects.Besides, the analgesic effects were observed by comparing the differences of pain tolerance threshold and the inhibition ratio of writhing response among groups from hot-plate test and the acetic acid writhing test.ResultThe aqueous extract of Polygonum chinense Linn inhibited febrile temperature of rat caused by yeast. The sersum biochemical indicators included alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alkaline phosphatase(ALP),total bilirubin(T-BIL)and direct bilirubin(D-BIL)was suppressed,as well as liver index and malondialdehyde(MDA)in hepatic tissue of icteric rat while superoxide dismutase(SOD)increased. The Liver tissue pathological examination indicated that the injury had been alleviated to certain extent.Besides, the aqueous extract of Polygonum chinense Linn reduced the swelling of mice auricles by Xylol and the capillary permeability by acetic acid as well, meanwhile relieved the pain which induced by hot stimulation and acetic acid respectively.ConclusionAqueous extract from Polygonum chinense Linn possessed obvious effects upon anti-pyrexia,jaundice-relieving and anti-inflammation.The jaundice-relieving mechanism related to antioxidantion probably. In addition,Polygonum chinense Linn played a part on the rise of tolerable pain level, due to the fact that only high dose group revealed the inhibition ratio of writhing response achieved more than 50%,the peripheral abirritation remained uncertain and demanded for further researches to be approved.
