Aim:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of syndrome differentiation acupuncture for postprandial distress syndrome of deficiency of spleen and stomach qi, investigating the impact of demographic characteristics on the onset of disease, and further to provide more effective scientific evidence about the syndrome differentiation acupuncture for PDS.Methods:1. Collecting the baseline data of 97 participants and analyse the demographic characteristics by statistical analysis.2. Randomized controlled trial method was used,97 patients were divided into two groups-group A(treatment group) and group B(control group). According to corresponding treating strategy, both groups received one session of 30 minutes’ treatment everyday,20 sessions in total. Nepean Dyspepsia Index was chosen as the outcome measurement for the clinical evaluation at time points of baseline, the 4th week and the 8th week.Result:1. Demographic analysis:(1)among all the participants, with respect to gender, the female make up the majority; regarding age, the youth account for the largest proportion; regarding vocation and education, people with hight educational level, employers and students account for the majority.2. Clinical therapeutic effect evaluation:as NDI shows, in terms of the symptom improvement such as upper abdominal distress, bloating, nausea, group A is superior to group B with significant difference(p<0.05); there is no significant difference in abdominal pain, heartburn, vomitting and so on between two groups; with respect to disturbance field, controlling field, food and beverage field and sleep field, treatment group is superior to control group with significant difference(p<0.05).3. In the 4th week, the therapeutic effect of the youth and the mid-age was superior to that of the elder; the therapeutic effect of the youth alone was superior to that of the rest.Conclusions:1. Gender and age are important factors for the onset of PDS, the female and youth are more susceptible to PDS, which might be related to education, vocation and physiological differences between two genders. Also, age is positively correlated to the scores of upper abdominal distress and the failure of regular meal intake.2. To treat PDS of deficiency of spleen and stomach qi, pattern differentiation acupuncture is superior to placebo acupuncture.3. Age can influence the therapeutic effect of acupuncture treatment.
