Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, seriously affecting the normal life of patients and their families, greatly reducing the patient’s self-existence.Researchers predict that by 2020,depression will rise from the current fourth-largest human disease to the world’s second-largest disease, whose impact will be second only to heart disease. Many brain imaging studies have revealed abnormalities in the structure or function of the brain of depression patients, mainly related to emotional processing and cognitive ability. The analysis are based on single-modal of brain imaging, magnetic resonance imaging can provide multimodal of brain imaging data.In this paper,we use multimodal which involves structural magnetic resonance imaging(sMRI)and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI)to study major depression disorder patients. In this paper, firstly,we used the VBM-DARTEL method to study s MRI data of patients with major depression disorder and normal controls, and detect the gray matter volume changes in patients. We found that the decreased gray matter volume of brain regions are mainly distributed in the frontal and temporal lobes, including right temporal pole:temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, right insula, left middle temporal gyrus; The increased grey matter volume of brain regions are mainlydistributed in the parietal and frontal lobe, including right medial frontal gyrus, right postcentral gyrus, right supplementary motor area, left medial frontal gyrus, right precentral gyrus, left amygdala and other brain regions. Then we selected three brain areas, which gray matter volume have changed largest—right medial frontal gyrus, right postcentral gyrus, right supplementary motor area as the regions of interest(ROI),to analysis the resting state fMRI brain functional connectivity. We used seed-based voxel-wise analysis to get the abnoemal brain functional connectivity of patients. On the whole, the functional connectivity of abnormal brain areas are basically negative activation, that means, compared with normal controls, patients’ abnormal functional connectivities are significantly reduced.Abnormal brain regions are mainly located in the temporal lobe and frontal lobe, including right frontal gyrus, precuneus, left fusiform gyrus, right inferior temporal gyrus and other brain regions. The multimodal method in this study can help us to better understand the impact of MDD on the brain through structural abnormalities and functional abnormalities in patients with severe depression.
