Objective:To assess the effectiveness of inspiratory muscle training(IMT)on inspiratory function and exercise endurance for stroke survivors by using Power Breathe K5 trainer.Method:50 stroke patients meeting the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria were randomly assigned to the experimental(n=25)and control groups(n=25).Both groups received routine medicine treatment and conventional rehabilitation training(include:body functional rehabilitation and acupuncture treatment).Interventions in experimental group were based on routine training, with resistance adjusted weekly to 30%of MIP by Power Breathe K5 trainer. The control group underwent the same protocol with the uneffective threshold resistance valve(LOAD=3cmH2O).About IMT training,30 times in each session,2 sessions per day,6 days per week for 6weeks.Inspiratory muscle function recorded by K5 trainer:inspiratory muscle strength(S-index/MIP),peak of inspiratory flow(PIF),intake volume(L),Energy(J);activities of daily living measured by modified Barthel Index;exercise endurance reflected by the time to insist Motomed aerobic treadmill training(bedside). All results measured by the same therapist.Results:1)Before intervention, there was no significant difference between two groups for all indexes, with comparability(P>0.05).2)After intervention,MIP、PIF:the outcomes were higher than before treatment in experimental group(p<0.01),but no significant difference in control group(P>0.05),the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group(p<0.01);Energy:the outcomes were higher than before treatment in experimental group(p<0.01),but no significant difference in control group(P>0.05),the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group(P<0.05);Volume:both two groups showed no significant difference(P>0.05),and there was no significant difference between two groups(p>0.05);Modified Barthel Scale:the outcomes were higher than before treatment in both groups(p<0.01),the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group(P<0.05);Time to insist on Motomed training(M):the outcomes were longer than before treatment in both groups(p<0.01),the experimental group was significantly longer than the control group(P<0.01);Conclusions:1.IMT can improve exercise endurance significantly for stroke people;2.IMT can increase the abilities to activities of daily living for stroke people;3.IMT can improve inspiratory muscles function significantly for stroke people.
