Background With the development of social economy and population aging,China has entered an aging society in which the problem about the aged becomes a public concern, and the health problems followed by are significant,in which senile dementia has been a serious public health problem.,and neurodegenerative diseases is increasing which included Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.Cognitive impairment seriously affects the quality of life of the elderly and bring heavy mental stress and economic burden for family and society. So investgating influencing factors for cognitive function on the early prevention of senile dementia are important. Objectives To investigate cognitive function, chronic disease prevalence and way of life in the elderly in tianjin pension agency, evaluating the intervention effect of lycopene combined with vitamin E for improving of cognitive function and improving of clinical and laboratory index in patients with MCI(mild cognitive impairment).Providing scientific basis for carring out early nutritional intervention in elderly to effectively improve the cognitive function and reduce the incidence of dementia.Methods1.According to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria,Selected 229 residents in Tianjin elderly innursing home as the research objects.Questionnaire was used to collect general information, health condition, mode of life,MMSE(Mini-Mental State Examination),ADL(Activities of daily life scale)and Clinical dementia rating, analysising the influence factors of elderly CI detection rate.2.Based on the principle of ethics and informed consent,56 elderly MCI patients were assigned to the placebo(26 persons)and lycopene groups(30 persons),respectively supplemented with placebo compound of lycopene and vitamin E preparation for 6 months. The cognitive function was evaluated by basic cognitive aptitude test(BCAT)test. The concentrations of serum IL-6,IL-10,TNF-α,us-CRP and Hcy were measured. While the glucose and lipids levels in serum were also tested.Results1.Participants’ average age was 78.57±7.84 years,CI prevalence was 35.8%.The results of Logistic regression analysis showed that educational level, marriage, and social conditions were significantly affected prevalent rate of CI.Among them, the protective factors for CI were high education level, marriage and good social conditions.Furthermore, hyperhomocysteinemia is closely related to the occurrence of cognitive dysfunction.2.Compared with placebo group, the scores of BCAT in lycopene group were significantly increased(P<0.05).Similarly,the concentrations of serum Hcy and IL-6 were significantly declined(P<0.05),while there were no significant changes in the concentrations of serum IL-10,TNF-α,us-CRP,blood lipids and glucoses. Conclusions Education level, marriage, social conditions, and plasma homocysteine level are the main influence factors of CI in elderly persons. The lycopene combined with vitamin E intervention could significantly improve the cognitive function of elderly MCI patients.Declines of Hcy and inflammatory factors may be related to the underlying mechanism.
