ObjectiveThe study aimed to assess the present situation of the sleep quality, depression and perceived stress among the commubity-dwelling elderly. To investigate the relationship between sleep quality, depression and perceived stress, which will provide a scientific basis for the health education of elderly in community.MethodsA cross sectional survey was carried out in May to August 2015 in Liaoning Province by the convenience sampl.Respondents were selected from community in Shenyang(Heping district,Tiexi district and Huanggu district),Dalian(Shahekou district,Ganjingzi district and Xigang district),Jinzhou(Linghe district,Guta district and Taihe district)of Liaoning province.Survey stations were set up in the places where older people often held activities, such as parks, squares, and community health service centre. The demographic questionnaire,Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index Scale(PSQI),Chinese version Perceived Stress Scale(CPSS)and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CES-D)employed to evaluate the general demographic characteristics, sleep quality, perceived stress and depression.Data entry and descriptive analysis,t test, anova, pearson correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis was conducted by SPSS 21.0,and the mediating effect model was tested with AMOS22.0.Results1、The score of PSQI,CPSS and CES-D were(5.53±2.96),(25.18±8.12)and(12.63±8.90)respectively.There was positive correlation between the score of PSQI and the score of CPSS and CES-D(r=0.63、0.46;P<0.01),and there was positive correlation between the score of CPSS and PSQI(r=0.47,P<0.01).The results of simple linear regression showed that sleep quality proved to be positive predictor of depression(β=0.460,t=15.972,P<0.001)and perceived stress(β=0.617,t=24.469,P<0.001).The results of multiple linear regression showed that sleep quality(β=0.278,t=7.927,P<0.001)and perceived stress(β=0.295,t=8.576,P<0.001)proved to be positive predictors of depression. The SEM could be perfectly supported by the investigation data(χ2/df=4.713,CFI=0.940,GFI=0.956,NFI=0.926,TLI=0.925,IFI=0.941,RFI=0.907,RMSEA=0.060).The 95% CI of the direct and indirect effect of sleep quality on depression excluded 0,the relationship between sleep quality and depression was partly mediated by perceived stress, the value of mediating effect was 0.129,and the proportion of mediation was 62.6%(0.129/0.206).ConclusionsSleep quality of old participents was worse, and perceived stress and depression were in high level. There was positive correlation between the score of sleep quality index, perceived stress and depression.Sleep quality index was significant predict factor of perceived stress and sleep quality, perceived stress were significant predict factors of depression.Sleep quality plays a indirect effect on depression by the mediating effect of perceived stress among the community-dwelling elderly. This study also suggested that relevant departments should take steps to enhance sleep quality and relieve stress for alleviating the severity of depression.
