The intrinsic writing motivation, which drives writers, creating activity, has always been a concern in the literary circle.By taking a quite similar approach to Freud's psychoanalysis,Marcel Proust has presented a new spiritual world to readers in his masterpiece Remembrance of Things Past.In this piece of work, all these figures and the hidden power trigger the outbreak of Proust's reminiscence and creation. What is the intrinsic writing motivation that drives Marcel Proust to work wholeheartedly and painstakingly on this monumental masterpiece? Therefore, based on the textual analysis of Remembrance of Things Past and Freud's psychoanalysis theory,by analyzing Marcel Proust himself and the various figures he creates in this book from the aspects of:"Oedipus complex","Interpretation of Dreams","Sexual perversion",evil and jealousy, this thesis discusses and explores Proust's writing motivation. This thesis consists of the following three parts:foreword, main body and conclusion. The foreword section briefly introduces the practical significance, research trend and relevant issues of research on Marcel Proust. Then,it presents the importance of referring to psychoanalysis in interpreting the book and exploring the creating motivation.Besides, the research value, theoretical methods and excepted organization of this thesis have been stated in this part. The main body is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, based on a brief introduction of Freud's "Oedipus complex"concept, this chapter firstly analyzes the "Oedipus complex" of Marcel, who is the protagonist of Remembrance of Things Past modelled on the writer himself, focusing on his morbid attachment to his mother and his hostility and jealousy of his father.Secondly,by probing into the relationship between the protagonist and his lovers,Albertine and Mrs.Guermantes, this part aims to argue that the essence of his love towards them is a transformation of "Oedipus complex".However,as the morbid and adoring love dies, this transformed "Oedipus complex" fails to release. After his mother's death,in spite of the deterioration of physical and mental conditions,Marcel Proust found a way to release this complex unsatisfied and repressed in his heart by describing the scene of kissing her mother during writing Remembrance of Things Past. For this reason, the "Oedipus complex" of Marcel Proust, repressed in his lifetime and eagerly in need of release,is one of his writing motivations. In Chapter Two,according to Freud's psychoanalysis theory and his interpretation of dreams, this section chooses to analyze the dreams of Swan,Marcel and the daydreams.By discussing the manifest and latent dream of Swan,it implies the strong sense of possession and love. Then, referring to Freud's principle of"dream is a desire to meet",and interpreting the different dreams of Marcel, this thesis comes to a conclusion that the desire for love repressed in dreams and subconsciousness is another motivation which drives Marcel Proust to write Remembrance of Things Past.In the third chapter, the first thing to be discussed is the evil world created by Marcel Proust in Remembrance of Things Past and his view of love—Love's nature is jealousy;Followed by that,by means of psychoanalysis theory, this chapter deeply analyzes another recurrent theme in Remembrance of Things Past—jealousy, and concludes that jealousy is in fact the repressed desire for libido;last but not least,by comparing Proust's view of sexual perversion and homosexuality with that of Freud's in Three essays on sexuality,it comes to the conclusion that both Proust and Freud consider the sexual orientation as primitive human nature and instinct rather than a crime.Through the description of sins such as jealousy and homosexuality in Remembrance of Things Past, particularly in Sodome et Gomorphe and The Prisoner,Proust has completely released human being's desire which has been imprisoned long time in the secular world, which is another writing motivation of Proust. In the conclusion part, there is a summary of Proust's writing motivations, arguing that the intrinsic motivation of Proust is in fact the desire repressed deeply in his soul:the repressed "Oedipus complex",libido and the instinct of homosexuality.Highlighting the significance of psychoanalysis method in literary criticism,by reading this autobiography from the perspective of Freud's psychoanalysis theory, this thesis inquires into the writer's writing motivations by intensive textual reading and provides references to the later and deeper research.
