As an Afghan-born American writer, Khaled Hosseini has published three novels in his life and all of them became bestsellers. After the great success in writing, Hosseini devotes himself to charitable work. In2006, he becomes a Good-will Envoy to the United Nations Refugee Agency. This translation report is based on Hosseini's novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, excerpting from chapter48to51. These chapters are mainly about the female character Laila who eventually reunites with her lover-Tariq. Although they live in a comfortable and happy life in Murree, Laila chooses to go back hometown and support the reconstruction of Afghanistan. This report can be divided into four parts:part one is introduction, including task description and reasons for task selection. Part two is the background information of the source text, including the introduction of the author, main contents of the book and the text analysis. Part three is the key part of this report, and it mainly discusses the difficulties and strategies in the translation. The translator confronted with three problems during her translation process:the employment of idioms, frequent appearance of unfamiliar words and the translation of long and complex sentences. And eight techniques are used by the translator, namely, reversing, inserting, cutting, recasting, amplification, omission, conversion and negation. Part four concludes the author's translation experience and some unsolved problems. The report is a review and summary for this translation practice. The author hopes that this report is valuable for the English-Chinese translation of similar texts.
