The Interpretive Theory postulates three stages in the process of translation or interpretation, namely, understanding, deverbalization and expression. Interpretation of sense is realized on the text level by combining language meaning and cognitive complements. Since its emergence, the Interpretive Theory has been widely accepted and used in translation and interpretation, and has had significance to the teaching of translation. The thesis lends strength from the Interpretive Theory and corpus methodology to study the translated texts by translation majors in graduate school, so as to evaluate the students’translation capabilities and explore ways for potential improvement. The results from text analysis and evaluation will also be connected with translation teaching to offer reference for teachers.Texts used in this thesis come from first-year students at the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, Beijing Foreign Studies University. According to the scores they get for their translation, the students are divided into two groups, between whom a comparison is made. Quantitative and qualitative studies will both be employed to generate a comprehensive evaluation of the students’capabilities in terms of understanding, expression, deverbalization and interpretation of sense on the text level. In addition, a survey is conducted to help confirm and explain findings in the quantitative and qualitative studies. The studies identify significant discrepancy between the two groups in understanding of source culture and expression of complicated sentences. Meanwhile, common features are also detected in both groups. Expression lags behind understanding for these students. The weakest point in understanding lies in culture-related content and their expression capability is blemished with insufficient deverbalization. They have begun to focus on texts, but interpretation of sense is seldom successful in their practices. Finally, the thesis connects the major findings with translation teaching, trying to offer suggestions for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of teaching.
