Addition Translation From The Perspective Of The German Functionalist Theory

Addition translation is used frequently when we translate Japanese into Chinese. This dissertation was guided by the German Functionalist Theory, and discussed the addition translation used when we translate Japanese into Chinese.Firstly, this dissertation reviewed the German Functionalist Theory and the prior studies of addition translation. And on the basis of this, this dissertation summarized the theory’s general guide for addition translation, namely that addition translation must conform to the purposes of translation and meet the needs of translated texts’recipients. Besides, based on conforming to the purposes of translation, we need to use addition translation to let translated texts be smooth. Moreover, addition translation have to consider the intentions and expectations of all the people who participate in the communicative acts of translation, and coordinate as far as possible the purposes of translation and the intentions of original texts’ authors, so that addition translation can be loyal to all the people who participate in the communicative acts of translation.Secondly, focusing on the translation practice, according to its purpose of translation, namely that deliver the information of original text to a wide range of Chinese readers effectively and let them understand the information, this dissertation summarized the theory’s specific guide for addition translation which has the purpose of translation above, namely that on the basis of being loyal to the intentions of original text’s author, use addition translation to let translated text be smooth and understandable. According to this specific guide, this dissertation summarized the strategies of addition translation which conform this specific guide with the examples in the translation practice. The strategies of addition translation are divided into structural addition translation, illustrative addition translation, logical addition translation and rhetorical addition translation. In the 4 strategies, structural addition translation includes the addition translation of personal pronouns, verbs, numerals+quantifiers, adverbs and original text’s omit parts. Besides, illustrative addition translation includes the addition translation which is aimed at making clear the meanings of sentences and words. Moreover, logical addition translation includes the addition translation of demonstratives or demonstratives+quantifiers and conjunctions.Lastly, this dissertation summarized the study by reaffirming the theory’s general guide for addition translation and its specific guide for addition translation which has the purpose of translation above, as well as the strategies of addition translation which conform this specific guide, and showed clearly the applicability of the strategies of addition translation conforming to this specific guide.
