Ha Ding (1923-2003) is a well-known master of watercolor in China. He devoted all his lifetime to the art of watercolor painting. He persists in studying the characteristics and secrets of artistic language. And, he draws lots of relevant theories in his process of practice. All make a great contribution to the art. In combination with the history background of the painter, the development history of Chinese watercolor painting, this paper mainly analyses Ha Ding’s creation of the watercolor from the last century 40’s to 90’s. The author interprets and analyses Ha Ding’s watercolor painting from multi-perspectives of the artist’s style, technique, the main theme and the painting art language.Besides, Ha Ding’s experience is really a microcosm of that time and it fully confirms what the second generation watercolor painters contribute to the development of Chinese watercolor painting. Through their talents and wisdom, they not only explore a new way to combine Chinese and Western watercolor painting, but also lay a rich ethnic cultural imprint for the future generation.This paper explores and analyzes Ha Ding’s watercolor painting and also shows the author’s admiration for the watercolor predecessors.
