Functional Equivalence In English Translation

Language,as the carrier of culture,reflects different cultural connotations;meanwhile,culture is spread all over the world via language.Nowadays,Chinese culture is increasingly integrating with the outside world,introducing more Chinese classic literature to the world;likewise,more foreign literary works have been brought to China.In this situation,the author decides to translate the part of The Prince of India,and write the report on this project.The novel,The Prince of India,is very attractive for its vivid characters,exciting plots and moving words,making people feel the charm of language,experience the originality of the foreign culture,understand the differences between the eastern and western culture,and inspire our work of translation.The translation report is under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,the author applies the translation strategies in the report: First,by using the literal and liberal translation methods,equivalence between the source language and target language is made possible,hence reducing the loss of cultural meaning after the translation.Second,by using the positive and negative translation methods,as well as considering the similarity and difference of the two languages,the translated text is matched to the expressing habit of the target language.Third,by using amplification,the language form is matched to the expression habit of the target language.Fourth,by using reorganization translation method,the reads of the target language can accept the translation text much easier.The report has provided some translation strategies of long and difficult sentences during the process of English-Chinese translation.What's more,some experiences and shortcomings from the whole translation process can be drawn so as to further improve translation skills.
