A Translation Practice Report On A Hundred Thousand Whys-The Global Science Sector

The thesis is a translation practice report based on the C-E translation practice of A Hundred Thousand Whys-the Global Science Sector published by the Youth and Children Press. The report analyzes the stylistic features of the Chinese version and as for the translation difficulties appearing in the process of translation practice selectively picks out the excerpts of English version as the translation examples to illustrate how the translation obstacles are overcome under the guidance of Nida’s translation equivalence theory, thus getting a satisfactory translated version.The Chinese version of the translation practice is a material of more than 10 thousand characters extracted from the published popular science book A Hundred Thousand Whys-the Global Science Sector. The translation practice is conducted under the guidance of Nida’s formal and dynamic equivalence theory. Firstly, the translation practice report gives a brief introduction to the task background, task objectives and task preparation. Secondly, the report makes a brief explanation about Nida’s equivalence theory on which the translation practice is based. Thirdly, the report carefully sorts out and analyzes the stylistic features of Chinese original version, getting the conclusion that it has abundant terminologies and Chinese four-character words in lexical aspect and it emphasizes rhetorical questions, long sentences without conjunctions and Chinese literary quotations in syntactic aspect. For the stylistic features above, the report has also concluded the ways of getting the better translated version. Lastly, in the analyses of the translation examples, the report specifically analyzes that under the guidance of Nida’s equivalence theory, a translator has to resort to the translation strategies and skills such as literal translation, transliteration, foreignization; free translation, conversion, domestication to better deal with the translation difficulties. In free translation part, the report also emphasizes how a translator can make use of grammatical cohesive devices in English text to deal with the grammatical cohesion inside the text of the English version subtly to solve the translation problems. In this part, the report mainly concludes that a translator is able to apply the reference and substitution in grammatical cohesive devices to achieve equivalence effect in practice.This translation practice report takes the C-E translation of popular science such as A Hundred Thousand Whys-the Global Science Sector as an example, and summarizes the possible problems and experience gained in the C-E translation of popular science in the hope of providing the further enlightenment and guidance for the similar text translation later on.
