| Politics and Culture of Ancient China is a course of Peking University which is taught by Professor Deng Xiaonan and Professor Yan Buke. It gradually became an on-line course of high quality with the use of multimedia from 2003. The subject of this interpreting report is Chapter 8 of this course, given by Professor Deng Xiaonan, The Silk Road and the Cultural Communication Between the West and the East. The task process consists of “pre-interpreting” and “interpreting process”. The main work of the “pre-interpreting” is to collect the relevant material of the historical background and the technical terms. And the “interpreting process” describes the implementation of the interpreting task. Then the text is put down for the use of case analyses. In case analyses, the interpreter firstly gives an analysis of the language features of this material. Historical material has a lot of cultural factors, such as technical terms and historical allusions. But an open course is different from a speech. Without text, the teacher may choose some colloquial words to make the contents easier to understand. So sometimes the language might be in lack of logic or too wordy. Then this report analyses the interpreting methods and strategies adopted in the practice such as amplification and omission, in order to communicate smoothly, and does case analyses based on skopostheory. The interpreter hopes that the interpreting methods and strategies presented in this report could guide the interpreting practice of this kind in the future. |
