This translation report is about travel guide, named “ Lonely Planet: Washington, DC ”, one periodical of Lonely Planet, which introduces the top sights, local life, food and shopping of Washington, DC. The author chose the first and the second chapter of the book to translate and analyze.This is a text on travel and its translation of the text has its special features: flexibility, interestingness. But when historical events are related in text, it also requires seriousness. The language style of travel text is relaxing, and full of infectious power. In order to insure the accuracy for the different culture between China and America and the professional terms in the text, the author did lots of work to think over, though short sentences dominant this travel text. Travel text requires faithful, smooth translation in a relaxing text environment.Translating “ Lonely Planet: Washington, DC ” is good for Chinese reader to learn foreign custom, culture and history of Washington, which benefits to the cultural communication and cultural fusion between China and America.The author finished the translation on the guide of Skopos theory mentioned by Hans Vermeer, a Germany representative of functional school. First, the author analyzed the language and words features, and foresaw some difficulties. And, the author made sure to translate on the guide of Skopos theory according to author’s translation experience and related translation theories. Then, the author decided to adopt some translation skills according to the different translation purpose. Finally, the author summarized that the author should abide by the “ skopos principle ”, “ faithful principle ” and “ coherence principle ” to translate this text.After finishing this translation, the author believes that the translation is not the simple transform between two languages according to one’s imagination but is to closely and greatly convert the original words into the target words to readers on the guide of proper translation theory and according to the text type, language style and words feature, and do translation with domestication.
