Chinese language is becoming increasingly popular in Thailand. The main factors are as follows: Firstly, China’s rapid economic development in recent years along with the close relationship that exists between China and Thailand since ancient times, brought Thailand’s and China’s economic development and cultural exchanges closer. Secondly, the amount of Thai students going to China for further studies increases in great amount every year, especially among the overseas Chinese and Thai people with Chinese ethnic origins, who attach great importance to Chinese language, thus more adolescents begin to study Chinese language.Currently, the number of Chinese language learners in Thailand increases every year. Thai people wanting to learn Chinese language are scattered among all age groups along with different motivation to learn the language. The researcher wants to study the reason why they choose to learn Chinese language and what is their motivation for learning Chinese language. This research is useful for the development of Chinese education in Thailand. In this paper, the researcher uses Abraham Maslow’s "hierarchy of needs" theory as the main theory for this research.The purpose of this paper is understanding the motivation of the students from Mahasarakham University in learning Chinese language. The main contents include: Age, Gender, Thai of Chinese ethnic origins or not?, Grades, did they learn Chinese before?, HSK score and through which means of communication did they get to know about Mahasarakham University?. This research will provide practical advice for teaching Chinese language in Mahasarakham University.
