| As one of the most famous commercial film directors in Hong Kong, Wang Jing always exactly grasps the film market trend. However, film critics only find fault with the vulgar Hong Kong-type jokes, but never make in-depth analysis and study of his creation mode and features. It is unfair to neglect the contribution of a director who creates the commercial film miracle in Hong Kong. During over three decades of his film career, Wang Jing has shot nearly all types of films. In particular, the “gamble” series from Challenge of the Gamesters in 1981 led the gambling trend in Hong Kong, and constitute an important part of gamble films in the world. As the essential attribute of films, the commercial nature can’t promote the prosperity of commercial films if it is not recognized in the market. Thus, it is necessary to conclude a set of complete business operation mode by studying the entertainment spirit and market performance of Wang Jing’s film works.The paper is divided into four chapters:Chapter One concludes features of Wang Jing’s commercial films, analyzes creation process of “gamble” film series and demonstrates their status in the films of Hong Kong. Wang Jing’s films are featured by large quantity, various subjects and abundant expression means. His gamble films from 1981 to 2016 have experienced four stages including initial stage, flourishing stage, low-ebb stage and innovation stage, which is the real record of the mindset change of Hong Kong people and provides creation model for other gamble films.Chapter Two makes a comprehensive analysis on the “gamble” films from such aspects as theme, plot, characters, emotion and means with the films in the first three stages as the scope, and concludes four theme types. Besides, the relatively fixed narration steps are verified with films. Three types of characters are listed to demonstrate the emotion in the films. The creation means are also analyzed.Chapter Three concludes that “gamble” film series pay no attention to polishing film language, but focus more on text content and image feature of actors ’ performance. However, in some scenes, the upgrading scene is adopted to highlight characters, the fast motion is used to express comical effect and the continuous cutting from various scenes and angles are adopted to demonstrate the wonderful gambling.Chapter Four analyzes the development and innovation of “gamble” films in the new period from narration content, character image and expression method with The Man from Macau series as examples.The Conclusions part describes Wang Jing’s understanding of films and demonstrates that the “gamble” films are of great business development value. |
