A Study On Prostitutes Of Qiqihaer (1907-1947)

Prostitution is an extremely serious social problem and it has existed for thousands of years in China. Not only has the prostitution system which survived from the feudal society damaged the mental and physical health of women, but also destroyed many families. It has very bad impact on the harmony and stability of the society.The prostitution has lasted for about 30 years since the first brothel was open in Qiqihar during the Late Qing Dynasty, which brought a serious influence to the whole city of Qiqihar. After the liberation of Qiqihar in April 1946, the government began to transform the prostitutes in Qiqihar.The thesis includes three parts:The first chapter is an introduction. This part includes the concept of the prostitute, the purpose and significance of the study on the prostitutes, and the current study condition at home. From this part, we can know the basic study situation of the prostitutes, especially the process of the study on the transform of prostitutes in Qiqihar, which builds the foundation of the following exploratory research.The second part includes the second and the third chapter. The second chapter mainly introduces the prostitutes in Qiqihar before liberation. From this part, we can generally know the basic situation and the characteristics of the prostitutes in Qiqihar. And this part also analyzes the reason and the impact of the appearance of the prostitutes. Before the liberation of Qiqihar, there existed the prostitutes both in urban area and in the countryside. The existence of prostitutes does great harm to the society, the family and themselves. The third chapter mainly studies two aspects. One aspect is to analyze how the governor of the Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China and the Manchukuo period control the prostitutes from the daily management and relief of the prostitutes. Another aspect is to analyze how the democratic government governed the prostitutes after the liberation of Qiqihar. I will talk about the prostitutes in order of part transformation, limitation and clampdown of the prostitutes.The fourth chapter is the third part of the article which discusses the reflection caused by the prostitutes. After the liberation of the prostitutes, it was inspiring that family can reunite, also people can live and work in peace, meanwhile prostitutes were no longer gluttonous and averse to work. Prostitutes have almost been eliminated. However, the prostitutes’ reform was implemented in a hurry, and there have been some problems in the transformation process. For instance, the livelihood of the prostitutes cannot be solved and the relationship between the prostitutes and their relatives cannot be fixed. We should also pay enough attention to these issues in today’s society when the law enforcement agencies eliminate pornography and illegal publications. Finally, this thesis analyzes the reason why the prostitutes come to life again in Qiqihar and puts forward the suggestions about how to manage the prostitutes in Qiqihar.
