Ego-depletion Task Of Different Language Materials Affect Self-control Performance

Self control, also known as the "will power", is a part of the personality structure, which has the ability to inhibit the impulse of instinct, and has the ability to overcome the habit of deep-rooted or familiar behaviors. Baumeister has conducted the experimental method to prove that people’s self-control behavior depended on a kind of limited resources, and the results showed that the energy model was an effective explanation of self control. The study selected 57 students of a sports college who majored in applied psychology(17 male, 40female). Experimental design of 2 * 2, one variable was language material(English materials and Chinese Pinyin materials), the other was depletion task(depletion and non-depletion).The experiment used questionnaires and behavioral methodology, firstly subjects were randomly assigned to 4 groups, English material experimental group(depletion group),English material control group(non-depletion group) and Chinese Pinyin materials experimental group(depletion group) and Chinese Pinyin materials control group(non-depletion), then required them to do Manipulation check and BMIS, subsequently asked them to finish Stroop task and SPM. The results showed that,(1) in the SPM task, the average number of the correct number of the Chinese Pinyin materials in the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group, and the group of Chinese Pinyin material did not appear the Stroop Effect in the test phase.(2) the type of materials, the main effect of reaction time of different conditions existed significant differences; the correct number of inconsistent condition was marginal significant; and the main effect of depletion level did not show significance in every measuremental index.These results indicated that,(1) elimination task of Pinyin materials also had self resource loss, namely depletion task of Chinese Pinyin and English materials both in self-control performance had the same conclusion and in support of the energy model.(2)English materials and Chinese Pinyin materials during the process of the language generated,the target language and non-target language could be activated together. When extracting the target language vocabulary, people would be in the interference effect caused by non target language, and supported for the bilingual inhibitory control model.
