| The English translation of Jiemi(Decoded,A Novel)was published by Penguin Classics in Britain andFSG in America on March 18,2014.Such version has been successfully accepted by target countries. For its success, the translator plays a very important role.To find outhow the translatortake into consideration of various kinds of contextual space-time factors and help to make it successful is of great significance for theoretical and practical research oftranslation. This thesis analyzes various kinds of contextualspace-time factors with theoretical basis of Contextual Space-time Theory so as to reveal the influence of different contextual space-time factors on the translation and deepen the understanding on translation context. The thesis finds out that in the dimension of Socio-Contextual Space-time,western publishers pay great attention on literary and commercial value of the work. They make a final say on the work to translate and the way how to translate;the literary agent joints not only on the translation of the title but contributes much to its acceptance abroad through his academic and professional background. The target readers are fond of suspense novels and thrillers owing to historical tradition. The expectation of the target readers makes the translator adopt a domestication strategy. In the dimension of Psycho-Contextual Space-time,the translator chooses popular literature to translate owing to her family and education background. She translates the whole book quite closely to ST,because she believes that a good translation should abide by the original text. What’s more, her aesthetic perceptionmakes the translation work emit a sense of “classic beauty”.As to the Lingual-Contextual Space-time,the translator adjusts subtle expression in Chinese to make it more precise. The translator mainly adopts the strategy of foreignization under the special subjective context in order to avoid cultural conflicts and adopts the strategy of domestication under the special objective contextwhen dealing with cultural-bound words because no cultural conflicts would occur in such circumstance. The successful “Going Global” of the English translation of Jiemi offers us two inspirations. On the one hand,it is suggested that we should choose the work which can be easily accepted by target readers;on the other hand,as to translation strategies,it is suggested to adopt the strategy of foreignization under the special subjective context and the strategy of domestication under the special objective context in order to avoid cultural conflict and promote cultural exchange separately. |
