The quality of abstract translation is important to the paper as a whole. Also the abstract could make the readers get enough information about the main content. In the light of functional theories of translation and on the basis of related dissertations of recent five years, this thesis attempts to discuss how to translate abstracts. This thesis firstly presents the formation and development history of functionalist approaches and the previous research. Secondly, by comparing the similarity and differences of Chinese and English paper in lexical, syntactic and textual aspects, the article points out the exiting problems in the translation, and therefore comes up with the translation strategies under the guidance of Skopostheorie and its three rules, i.e. the linear interpretation in the guidance of Skopos rule, restructuring in consideration of coherence rule and content supplement for the purpose of fidelity.
